About Me

            Marisol :)
I'm a first generation college student and that puts A LOT of pressure on me to do good, because everyone and I mean EVERYONE in my family is watching my every move and making sure I don't mess up. I was born in Oceanside, but lived in San Marcos my entire life. I wanted to go away for college, but I have the typical Mexican family that wanted me to stay, so I did. With that said, you can imagine how close I am with my family <3

My major is Liberal Studies, my Depth of Study is Border Studies and my minor is also Border Studies. I've always wanted to be a teacher and I'm so proud of myself for everything I have accomplished this far and thankful that I have people in my life that believe in me, even when I don't believe in myself.

I work at Ross :/ it has its good side (the discount I get) and the bad (the crappy hours we are getting because Christmas is over). Working in retail has taught me to kill people with kindness :) Some customers can be so rude and take out their anger on you, but all you do is say is "Hi!" (Give them a big smile) "How are you? Did you find everything okay?" ... listen to them for a couple of seconds while you ring them up and before they leave say "Thank You! Have a good day" and smile! And waaaa laaa like magic their frown turns upside down.

My K-college education has been in San Marcos. I had a really good K-12 experience with wonderful teachers and meet great friends that til this day are my best friends. Up until college I found school easy, because I never pushed myself or placed myself out of my comfort zone. I did okay in my classes and ended up graduating with a 3.0.

I'm not up to date with technology. I don't have the latest iPhone or mac computer. My cellphone is a simple phone that receives and sends phone calls and text messages. I like technology because it is very useful. Technology is evolving quickly, this class is great because it will help us learn different ways we could integrate technology in our classrooms. It will also teach people like myself who only know how to use the computer to do homework, listen to music, and kill time be more confident in learning and using different programs and devices online.

I really like the School of Education Mission Statement. I never took the statement as part of my decision of attending CSUSM, but I always hear people speak highly of CSUSM so I am glad to be here. The sentence that stood out to me the most was "We are committed to diversity." I took education 364, and education 350 and my professors always spoke to us about the importance of having a diverse classroom because it teaches students that there's different culture groups and different people, but most importantly teaches us that being different is okay and we can see past each others differences to make a this world a better place for everyone to live in and accept people for who they are.

  1. Marisol!
I love your first blog! I live in Oceanside as well and wanted to go away for college, but never did! It's so awesome that you work at Ross, because I love Ross! I feel your pain about technology; it has changed so quickly and I only use it for minimal things! Great post!

  2. It looks like there are many Oceanside people in this class! I can totally relate to your situation with your family, I wouldn't have it any other way though. It's exciting to know that you are interested in the second part of Liberal studies which is Border studies!

  3. I work in retail and can totally understand the idea of killing with kindness, it can totally throw people in a good mood after being completely angry seconds before.

  4. I agree with you! Being first generations puts a lot of pressure on your shoulders. I am also first generation and I am the first one in my entire family to go to college and I also feel that pressure. But I believe you can do it, you are young and strong keep up the good work!!

  5. It is great that you are first generation going to college, but yes I can see how that can be stressful at times. The best feeling though will be when you finish and can see your family's faces specially your parents. I use that as motivation to keep me going. I know you will do great.

  6. Marisol,

I definitely understand where you are coming from when you talk about your experience as a first generation college student in your family. It is a HUGE pressure on someone who doesn't have access to guidance either. I am very positive you will be an amazing teacher if you take that path because you will be able to help your students who are in the same situation you were in :)
